In 1976 BENNINGHOVEN, JASPERS and SICHTERMAN first reported on obtaining secondary ion mass spectra from a number of amino acids using an argon primary beam to bombard a metal target covered with approximately a monolayer of sample [1]. In their pioneering work, they demonstrated that important molecular and structural information can be obtained from complex organic molecules which are nonvolatile and thermally labile, and the technique, labeled molecular SIMS, is in current and widespread use. Molecular SIMS, however, yields an inherently small secondary ion signal of short duration making the technique generally inaccessible to high resolution tandem type mass spectrometers of relatively low transmission efficiency.
