A relevant fraction of human sperm can be maintained in simple phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for more than 1 week at room temperature, a time that could be doubled if glucose was available. This does not seem to be directly due to sperm mitochondrial activity. (Fertil Steril (R) 2011;96:848-50. (C) 2011 by American Society for Reproductive Medicine.)
