In this paper we present the experimental results by comparing the quality of different satellite images (LANDSAT 7, MODIS, ASTER) after compression using four different methods namely Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG), Embedded Zero tree Wavelet (EZW), Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Tree (SPIHT), Joint Photographic Expert Group—2000 (JPEG 2000) are presented. Compression is performed with three different types of satellite sensor images, having different spectral bands, picture bit-rate and level of details using VCDemo software package. The Mean Square Error (MSE), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) values are calculated to determine the quality of the image after compression. The values are depicted in appropriate tables and figures. While comparing the obtained values we found that the compression methods have different impacts in each satellite image according to their picture bit-rate and level of details. The compression methods used in this work have different algorithms to perform the compression which are suitable for satellite images, we proposed to find the best method for satellite image compression.
