Scabies and pyoderma are common in Nigeria, and a study was performed inZaria, to investigate their association with acute glomerulonephritis. Zaria is a town of about 120 000 people, situated in the Guinea savanna region of Nigeria about 11° north of the equator, where these complaints are frequent. The peak incidence for both scabies and pyoderma was in children under the age of 10 years, and pyoderma which followed secondary infection of scabies was more prevalent towards the end of the humid rainy season. Acute nephritis was common at that time also, although only 17 out of 2000 patients with pyoderma developed this.Streptococcus pyogeneswas isolated from the skin lesions of 11 patients, but only 2 known nephritogenic strains- M49 and M55-were isolated; 3 had an uncommon type, M26, which hitherto had not been suspected of causing nephritis.Antideoxyribonuclease B was a much more useful indicator of streptococcal infection than the anti-streptolysin O titre.P.
