by DAVID L. BROWMAN Models of pastoralism have failed to take New World patterns into account. Although examples of camelid (llama and alpaca) pastoralism have been reported, they have largely been ignored. In this sense, this paper establishes a new case of pastoral nomadism, integrating archaeological, historical, and ethnographic data. It details the evidence for seminomadic pastoralism in the Jauja-Huancayo basin in the Andes of central Peru. The discussion is divided into three sections: a generalized model for pastoralism in the central highlands, a summary of the archaeological data for early pastoral groups in the Jauja-Huancayo area, and a survey of the ethnohistoric and ethnographic evidence on the present pastoral pattern in the Andes.
