Several species related to D. melanogaster have 2 loci containing sequences which code for the major heat-shock protein of MW 70,000 (hsp 70). These sequences are arranged as 2 pairs of inverted repeats. The structure of the 87C locus in D. melanogaster seemingly arose through DNA insertion. Hsp 70-coding sequences at the 2 loci are not evolving independently. Gene conversion between hsp 70 genes apparently occurred both within and between loci.
