The single crystalline elastic constants of the ternary Laves phase Mg(Cu, Zn)2 have been determined by the ultrasonic pulse‐echo technique over the temperature range 4.2°–298°K and over the composition range 10–51‐mol% MgZn2. The compositional dependence of the elastic contants indicates that a changing electron concentration causes initial contact and then a subsequent overlap of a Brillouin zone boundary by the Fermi surface. This contact occurs near 20‐mol% MgZn2 and correlates with previous measurements of magnetic susceptibilities and of specific heats. Debye temperatures at 0°K were also determined from the experimental values of the elastic constants.
