A. Filippone Cambridge University Press, The Edinburgh Building, Cambridge, CB2 8RU, UK. 2012. 635pp. Illustrated. £75. ISBN 978-1-107-02400-7. This book addresses the performance of aircraft in a real operating environment and it presents methods that are more advanced than the closed solutions frequently used during conceptual design studies. As well as the expected chapters on aspects of aircraft performance such as climb and cruise, later chapters deal with topics such as cold weather, noise and emissions. The book also considers models for turbofan and turboprop engines. Underlying the book is an extensive piece of software written by the author and reference is made to this code when describing how to execute many of the procedures used to analyse an aircraft. This code has been used to provide example results for current civil aircraft. These results are sometimes used to discuss concepts such as altitude flexibility which has been suggested as a way to minimise the generation of contrails. However, sometimes the reader is left to make their own conclusions about why certain trends occur in the results. At times the layout of the book appears to be too closely aligned to the computer software. A significant part of an early chapter is spent explaining how an aircraft is broken down into its constituent parts and then describes how to compute the associated volumes and wetted areas This appears to be excessive and for a practicing engineer, would verge on the obvious. The book is generally easy to read with clear explanations, and for a first edition, there are relatively few typographical errors. The purpose of each equation is clearly explained, although the origin of some equations is not always clear. Notation is clearly defined with a nomenclature at the end of each chapter. The book represents a useful reference for practising performance engineers and it would be a good starting point for anyone tasked with carrying out a performance analysis of an aircraft.
