provide an overview about quantum mechanical models for calculating the most stable configurations of clusters and their properties as e.g. different types of bonding or phase transitions in clusters. Magic numbers of constituents of the clusters as well as the existence of shell structures and supershells are discussed. Important especially from the practical point of view is the explanation of the size dependence of the properties of small clusters like binding or ionization energies, specific electrical resistance, compressibility, melting temperatures or surface free energies and to make analytical expressions available for the calculation of these dependences. Statistical theories are reported for the dissociation of excited clusters. A part of the book introduces in the experimental methods to produce size selected clusters and to detect them. Extensive studies on clusters formed by different elements of the periodic table are reported covering the range from alkali metal clusters to the clusters of rare gases. Results on clusters of oxides and halides of alkali metals are discussed as well as results of clusters formed of neutral molecules. Of course one finds a chapter dealing with carbon clusters and fullerenes. Looking on this broad variety of subjects the aim of the authors to write a text book
