The adsorptions of acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone, and methyl methacrylate (MMA) on montmorillonite (Mont) containing various interlayer cations have been studied by means of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray methods. Several characteristic carbonyl bands adsorbed on montmorillonite appeared differently at the region of 1723−1554 cm-1 depending on the species of cation and the evacuation temperature. The carbonyl stretching bands shifted about 190 cm-1 to lower frequencies have been observed only for the interaction between polyvalent cations and methyl methacrylate, which has been attributed to 〉CO···Mn+ complex formation. However, metal−MMA complexes without Mont using homogeneous solution were not obtained. The bands that appeared at 1703−1640 cm-1 are responsible for the hydrogen bonding between carbonyl oxygen and cationic water or cationic hydroxyl group, and the degree of shift indicates good correlation with the polarizing power of the interlayer cations except for the Al3+ ion. Howeve...
