Many roads in biological research have led and are leading to the plasma membrane. Anyone entering the field from whichever angle, be it from endocrinology, pharmacology, virology or pure biochemistry, will find this extremely comprehensive and concise guide very helpful, if not essential. General methods for cell breakage and preparation of membrane fractions are described, as well as individual approaches for specialized tissues and organs, ranging from liver and kidney to brush-border microvilli, lymphocytes and cultured cells. Each method is described in detail and assessed, and problems and pitfalls are warned against. The author seems to have left no stone unturned, so that one hardly need consult the original papers given as references. I was presented with this book as I was about to plan a B. Sc. practical session on ‘subcellular fractionation’and was delighted to find in the chapter on ‘Identification of Subcellular Fractions’ all that I needed for enzymic and chemical markers together with methods and references: this one book saved me hours of searching and decisionmaking. I am altogether very grateful to Dr. Evans for so thoroughly covering the practical side of this field and I expect that this feeling will be shared by many other owners of the book.
