Voluntary water intake in dogs differed markedly following the inj. of hypertonic solns. of isosmolar NaCl (20%) and urea (40%) despite identical increases in blood osmotic pressure. After the administration of hypertonic NaCl animals immediately consumed sufficient water to dilute their blood to the preinj. level; after urea, in the absence of an equal thirst stimulus, water intake was less and the osmotic pressure of the blood remained elevated. This difference in water intake was attributed to the difference of the water content in the cell.
