THE THE effect of pH on the reproduction of ciliates has been the subject of many investigations, but the effect of pH on food-vacuole formation has been investigated only for Colpidium (Mills, I93I). Metalnikow (1912) made some early observations on the effects of acidity and alkalinity on the frequency of food-vacuole formation in Paramecium sp., but at that time the methods of measuring hydrogen-ion concentration were quite inadequate. The feasibility of using the frequency of ingestion of food vacuoles of Paramecium as an index of the physiological state of the organism was pointed out by Jacobs (1912), Losina-Losinsky (1931), Bragg (1936), and King and Beams (1941). The purpose of the present investigation was to study the effect of H-ion concentration on the frequency of ingestion of food vacuoles in P. aurelia, P. caudatum, and P. multimicronucleatum. It is possible that the results of such a study might be useful in interpreting the sequence of Protozoa in hay infusion. The data obtained can be used for comparing the pH ranges and maxima for ingestion with those obtained by other investigators for the growth of each of these species. It is also possible to compare the reactions of three closely related species to identical conditions.
