A review of the research activity of the Italian community on theoretical nuclear structure is presented and discussed. These studies cover a broad field of nuclear structure phenomena and a large variety of theoretical models and methods to treat the many-body systems. Most of this activity is developed within international collaborations that in many cases include experimental groups. An increasing interest on nuclei far from the valley of stability is evidenced.
