Provides strong evidence for a role of the basal ganglia in voluntary movement. The finding that the earliest changes in unit activity in both the globus pallidus and putamen occur prior to the onset of a conditioned arm movement indicates that these nuclei participate in the initiation of the movement. The prominent pallido-thalamo-cortical circuit provides a pathway whereby pallidal activity could influence the precentral cortex prior to the onset of movement. The preferential relationship of units for contralateral arm movements and the direction-specificity observed in both pallidal and putamen units indicates, furthermore, that the detailed aspects of the movement are represented at this level.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
