The blood flow through the cerebral cortex of 10 dogs was calculated from the clearance rate of Dextran saturated with Krypton 85. Following each blood flow measurement, blood samples, taken from the femoral artery, were assayed for pCO2 and pH on an Astrup apparatus. Acidosis was produced in 5 of the dogs by the infusion of a 2% solution of lactic acid in normal saline. Alkalosis was induced in the other five dogs by infusion of sodium bicarbonate in saline (50 mEq in 100 ml.). Neither metabolic acidosis nor alkalosis produced any significant change in the blood flow through the cerebral cortex.
