Large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) is one of the most important commercial maricultured fish species in China, exhibiting sexual growth dimorphism under both culture and natural conditions. Therefore, culturing all‐female is meaningful. The procedures for inducing meio‐ and mito‐gynogenesis have been established, and then applied in producing materials for genetic studies and breeding. As almost all gynogens were females, the genetic sex determination mechanism in large yellow croaker is elucidated as XX‐XY type. The male‐specific DNA marker has been determined through in‐depth comparative analysis using multiple sets of male and female whole genome re‐sequencing data, which confirmed the XY‐male sex determination mechanism in large yellow croaker. The genetically female gynogen can be reversed to phenotypically males (pseudo‐males) with oral treatment of methyl testosterone (25–400 μg/L) with a liable period from 3–4 months old (body length: 30–37 mm), roughly consistent with the first round of germ cells mitosis in gonads. All‐female fry are produced through mating selected excellent females and pseudo‐males.
