Five female beagles were tested with 5 males during 2 estrous periods and preferences of each bitch for particular males were noted. Each female preferences were consistent from 1 period of heat to the next. Females reacted to non-preferred males with threat (snarl, bark, lunge and snap) or with attack (bite, chase). Some males were accepted by all females and others were rejected by the majority, but no male was rejected by all bitches. Rejection did not necessarily prevent a male from copulating with the rejecting female but did markedly reduce the frequency of successful matings.
