Local structure of neodymium and erbium ions in alkali silicate glasses has been investigated by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). The coordination number and interatomic distance for the nearest neighbor oxygen ions change with the modifier alkali metal species. It is shown that these structural parameters vary as a function of the field strength of the alkali metal ions. The alkali metal ions are found to locate at the second nearest site of the rare-earth ions. In an erbium-doped potassium silicate glass, the erbium-potassium distance is determined to be 3.78 Å, which agrees with the calculated value by a molecular dynamics simulation of Cormier et al. [J. Non-Cryst. Solids 152 (1993) 225].
