The winter population status of the scaly-sided merganser(Mergus squamatus) was studied in 5 major rivers:Ganjiang River,Fuhe River,Xinjiang River,Raohe River, and Xiushui River in Jiangxi Province in February,2009.The population size, sex ratio, spatial distribution, habitat characteristic, and factors contributing to its endangerment were analyzed.Using the line transect method,we surveyed about 400 km in the study area, and simultaneously conducted the survey along each transect. The results showed that there were 26 groups of scaly-sided mergansers wintering in Jiangxi Province,a total of 255 individuals recorded in the study. The sex ratio was 119:117,and the sex ratio of the scaly-sided merganser group was about 1:1.Except for the Ganjiang River,we found the wintering scaly-sided merganser in other 4 rivers involved. We not only recorded the wintering scaly-sided merganser group in Wuyuan,Guixi,Yiyang,Fuliang, and Xiushui where wintering scaly-sided merganser groups have been recorded in recent years, but also found them wintering in Yihuang,Wuning and Longhushan region for the first time.Furthermore, the group of scaly-sided mergansers in the Longhushan region had the largest number of individuals(53) in this study.Sand quarries, water pollution and illegal fishing were the major factors threatening the wintering population in Jiangxi Province.
