A program of Hemoccult slide testing for colon cancer detection was offered to approximately 1200 persons over the age of 62 years. The program consisted of a standardized information/demonstration procedure followed by the dissemination of prepared kits with instructions for self-directed testing of the stool. Approximately 40% (N= 472) chose to enroll in the program which involved self testing at regular intervals and returning tested slides for accuracy checks. Seventy-eight percent (N= 366) of those enrolling in the program returned slides. Program noncompliers were significantly more elderly, less likely to be married, less likely to have a family physician or to have previously used Hemoccult slides, and significantly more likely to rate their eyesight as fair to poor than persons who complied by mailing back analyzed slides. Results suggest that efforts directed at increasing initial enrollment in a self-directed Hemoccult testing program may be well placed. Once enrolled, a reasonably high percentage of persons complied with self testing.
