The enzyme [gamma]-glutamyl transpeptidase in human serum is electrophoretically not homogeneous. Its activity can be demonstrated in all blood protein fractions. About 75% of the GGTP activity is normally found in the [alpha]1- and [alpha]2-globulin fraction. In various internal diseases, especially in diseases of the liver and the bile duct, an unspecific increase of the GGTP activity can be observed, mainly in the [beta]- and [gamma]-globulin fractions. Owing to the absence of organospecific GGTP isoenzymograms, however, the test is not suitable for clinical diagnosis.
