DISCUSSIONThe presence of an abdominal mass with an incomplete border on a supine radiograph of the abdomen can indicate an extraabdominal location of the mass (including hernias and other masses). The sign may be of particular help when an abdominal hernia is gasless. In the case shown in part a of the,,, Figure, the mass demonstrating an incomplete border sign was an umbilical lipoma, as readily demonstrated on the CT scan in the same patient (,,, Figure, part b).
