AbstractThis study explores some of the archaeological dimensions of the recent manuscript finds.1 Focusing on archaeological work in the Chu 楚 area, where data are particularly ample, it summarizes and collates attempts to define rank/size classes of tombs, which are assumed to reflect hierarchical divisions in society. It is found that the dividing line between tombs of persons of aristocratic and commoner ranks, unmistakable in the Springs and Autumns period, blurs during the Warring States. The resulting ambiguities are of particular interest to the longstanding discourse on the genesis of classical Chinese thought from among members of the shi 士 (gentlemen) class. It turns out that most presently known Warring States manuscript finds come from tombs of persons who appear to have occupied ranks considerably above that of shi.
