The first isolation of an organometallic [pi]-complex of vitamin A acetate is reported. The reaction of vitamin A acetate with triiron dodecacarbonyl followed by chromatography and sublimation gave vitamin A acetate iron tri-carbonyl (I) as an orange semisolid in approximately 20% yield. De-acetoxylation of vitamin A acetate occurred at the same time to the extent of 60%. Iron tricarbonyl [pi]-complexes of the deacetoxylated products, namely anhydro vitamin A and its dimer, were also obtained as reaction products.
