The motile activity of growth cones of specific identified neurons [from Helisoma] was inhibited by the neurotransmitter serotonin, although other identified neurons were unaffected. As a consequence, affected neurons were unable to form electrical synapses, whereas other neurons whose growth is unaffected can still interconnect. Neurotransmitters evidently can play a prominent role in regulating neuronal architecture and connectivity in addition to their classical role in neurotransmission.
