A careful investigation of the iron (III)-catalyzed oxidation of cysteine has demonstrated that the reac-tion is zero order with respect to both cysteine and oxygen but two-thirds order with ferric ion. There is a marked pH effect with a pronounced maximum in rate at pH 8.1, and the existence of an iron-cysteine complex has been well documented. A quantitative interpretation of these observations leads to the following proposal.
