Adaptation times for pressure have recently been investigated by Zigler and by Crook and Crook and the reduction of nerve response under conditions of" constant stimulation," which also is referred to by physiologists as" adaptation," has been the subject of extensive investigations by Adrian and Zotterman, Bronk, Matthews, and others. This investigation extends the previous work on sensory adaptation times in some directions and bears directly upon the physiology of adaptation. Stimulation as well as adaptation time is recorded, showing graphically the effect of both size and weight of stimulus and demonstrating rates of movement as slow as. 005 mm. per sec. to be effective stimuli for pressure sensation. Findings based upon what have been regarded as constant stimuli have to be reviewed in the light of these demonstrations and some of them fundamentally altered. The work here reported led to a more extended research and as a result the discussion here has been limited to the more general problem of adaptation, and a discussion of the findings primarily of importance for pressure sensitivity is taken up in a second article with the advantage of the added data (I 3).
