The effects of eye removal and TTX injection on the pattern of GABA immunoreactivity in area 17 are identical. They can be detected 4 days after enucleation and 5 days after TTX injection. At these times, the effect is already close to maximal and does not change with longer survivals. The effect consists of a great reduction in the numbers of GABA immunoreactive neurons and of associated punctate, terminal-like structures in the neuropil of deprived-eye columns. Of the neurons in deprived-eye columns that remain GABA-immunoreactive, most display normal, dark staining, but some are noticeably lighter than normal. The effect is most obvious in layer IVC, where the largest number of GABA immunoreactive cells are normally concentrated. Here, in sections cut parallel to the cortical surface, stripes of heavy cell and neuropil staining alternate with stripes of greatly reduced cell and neuropil staining (Figure 1). Adjacent sections stained for CO show the same pattern of alternating dark and light stripes, which correspond to intacteye and deprived-eye dominance columns (Figure 1; Horton and Hubel, 1981). By superimposing the profiles of the same radially oriented blood vessels in each of the pairs of sections, the lightly stained (deprived-eye) CO stripes are found to coincide with stripes of greatly reduced GABA immunostaining. The reduction in GABA immunostained cell bodies and terminals in the deprived-eye stripes is evident in both subdivisions (IVCa and IVCB) of layer IVC, and in layer IVA, and is
