John Naisbitt, author of the best-selling Megatrends, devotes an entire chapter to the “information age” that is currently exploding around us. In First World countries, at the touch of a computer button, we can instantly learn how many PTA meetings were held when in Bloomington, Indiana between July 1984 and June 1985. For the asking, one can obtain instant printouts of how many inpatients between the ages of twenty-three and forty-five at a Kalamazoo, Michigan hospital suffered from gastroenteritis between 1979 and 1985.Yet, here, in the far southeast corner of what is often called the “dying continent,” figures and data are not only at a premium-they are often simply, not to be had. If they are to be had, they are often confused, contradictory, illegible, unreliable, trumped up, obscured in political conundrums, misspelled, wildly unstandardized, outdated, and/or absurd!
