The molecular weight of lysozyme has been redetd. by the ultracentrifuge as 14,100 t 500. The molecule appears to be a stubby prolate ellipsoid of rotation, with a max. length of 90 A and a minimum equatorial diam. of about 18 A depending on the degree of hydration assumed. Alternative possibilities of chain orientation within this shape are discussed assuming that the chains are coiled in Pauling-Corey helices.
