The use of whole animal systems for toxicity testing has been extensively supplemented during the past several years with in vitro test systems. Such systems, through continued improvement and expanded versatility as research tools, hold great promise for the more rapid and less expensive evaluation of the potential toxicity of new and existing chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In addition, in vitro systems are useful in the elucidation of the mechanisms by which chemicals induce tissue damage. In in vitro systems the experimental system can be rigidly controlled. In vitro systems also provide opportunities to explore routes and rates of xenobiotic biotransformation, a factor which often determines the nature and degree of the observed toxicity.
