The skeletons were selected so that there should be about 50 each of American white male and female and negro male and female and that each of the 4 groups should be evenly represented in each decade after adult age. The measurements made were age, stature, femur length, area of shaft, area of compact bone and percentage of compact bone in central half of femur, femur weight and skeleton weight. In each group, stature and femur length had the smallest coefficients of variation, area of shaft was intermediate and area of compact bone, percentage of compact bone, femur weight and skeleton weight had the highest coefficients of variation. Thus the first 3 measures changed less with age than the others. In all groups femur weight was most highly correlated with skeleton weight, but was obviously of no prediction value for living subjects. A joint regression analysis of skeleton weight upon age, stature, femur length, area of shaft and area of compact bone was made for each group. The best prediction equations for white males and females involved area of compact bone only, that for negro males included stature and shaft area, and that for negro females included age, shaft area and area of compact bone. [The measure of success of these equations may be judged by the reduction of the coefficients of variation from 14.6, 21.1, 16.2, and 17.2 per cent. to 11.7, 15.1, 12.9 and 12.8 per cent. respectively.]- A.
