Three basic questions concerning the species-area relationship for plants are discussed. Is there a unique theoretical basis for the species-area relationship? Is there a best-fit model of the species-area relationship? Can the parameters of a particular model, specifically the power function, be interpreted? These questions, plus factors such as habitat diversity, geographical isolation and immigration are analyzed.
