The requirements for urban design seem to be high in the context of shrinking cities. Moreover, different attributes of urban design are in demand. It seems that considering a range of approaches would be advisable in order to offer flexible solutions for the future development of shrinking cities, as suggested in the paper by Saehoon Kim (2018) with the strategies urban connector, place patchwork, social incubator and process-based strategies. In an earlier publication, Pallagst (2013) has claimed that a paradigm shift is taking place from growth-centred planning to shrinking smart. Yet it is still not clear if or in what way planning paradigms, planning systems, planning strategies and planning cultures are adapting when faced with urban shrinkage. Hollander et al.(2009, 232)
