Investigated the influence of sight on other sensations by a series of experiments on judging weight. Experiments with variable number of Ss included:(1) with lead disks and wooden disks, where the Ss lifted the weights with one or both hands (2) with paper bags, one filled with air, and the other with cotton, lifted along with lead weights for judging weight; and (3) with 13 brass cylinders, 10 of equal weight and 3 heavier, where the Ss were required to arrange the cylinders in order of weight, beginning with the heaviest. Results indicate that the illusion of weight increased with the differences in specific gravity of the substances compared; men were less prone than women to illusions of weight; and appropriate experience could lead to suitable allowances for the error of the senses. Concluded that comparison of weights was an exceedingly complex process.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
