Synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) nanoparticles are fabricated by a combination of nanoimprint lithography and ferromagnetic multilayer structures, followed by release and stabilization of nanoparticles in solution. The SAF nanoparticles have desirable magnetic properties with respect to multiplex magnetic labeling and sorting, and can be functionalized with fluorescent dyes.
