The chichibu-goby Tridentiger obscurus exhibits a distinct annual reproductive cycle, and spawns repeatedly during its sapwning season. In the present paper, reductions in ovarian activity following repeated spawnings during the spawning season are described. Yearling fish were sacrificed in the middle and at the end of the spawning season, and ovarian histology, distribution of oocyte diameter, estradiol-17β (E2) production, and pituitary gonadotrophic activity were compared between the two periods. E2 production by the ovary fell significantly at the end of the spawning season, suggesting a decline in ovarian activity with the approach of the close of the spawning season. These results are discussed in relation to the physiological condition of the ovary due to repeated spawnings.
