The incorrect alternatives to the items of the Raven Progressive Matrices are not equally likely to be chosen by individuals taking the test. Sigel (1963) analyzed the patterns of errors on several items of the Progressive Matrices and found sex and age differences in the alternatives chosen as the wrong response, but found no relationship between error patterns and total score on the test. Jacobs and Vandeventer (1970) categorized the incorrect responses on the Progressive Matrices as "superior" (partially correct) responses and "other."
