Soil structure refers to the arrangement of the primary soil particles sand, silt and clay into peds or aggregates. A modern definition recognises the importance of soil pores by referring to soil structure as the size, shape and arrangement of solids and pores, the continuity of pores, their capacity to retain and transmit air, water and dissolved substances, and the ability to support vigorous root growth and development. Soil structure is a physical manifestation of the processes involved in soil development. Surface soil structure is also influenced by soil management through addition of organic matter, cultivation, and animal and vehicle traffic.
