Examples are presented of three different convective patterns in lake-effect snow storms over Lake Michigan, USA: windparallel bands of clouds and precipitation due to horizontal-roll convection; deep, shore-parallel cloud bands associated with lakeinduced, meso low pressure centers; and midlake cloud bands resulting from the convergence of land breezes from the lake shores.
