A controlled study is described for chronic disease risk factor identification and intervention among 3000 (of 4600 eligible) school children, 11 to 14 years of age. Medical screening is followed by return of results to the student participants in a ' Health Passport' and is reinforced by a multidimensional health education intervention program which seeks to produce early development of healthy behaviour patterns including encouragement of self-responsibility for health. Preliminary data (WILLIAMS and WYNDER,J. Am. Med. Ass., 1976, v. 236, 2196-2197) from the first annual screening suggest that the most common risk factors among children, ages 11 to 14 years, are hypocholesterolaemia (17% over 180 mg%), obesity (12%), and cigarette smoking (10%). A strategy for follow-up and intervention for high risk children is described.
