(each for 2 h) in Alcian blue-free buffer, and dehydrated in a graded series of ethanol. Finally, samples were immersed in acetone twice, each for 2 min, and air-dried. Four con trol fish were processed in the same two ways. Samples were examined with a stereomicroscope (Olympus SZH -111). With the first method, gills were totally covered by salt crystals if not immersed in 80% ethanol overnight. While in the second method, the samples would have been iced over in glutaraldehyde solution, if directly transferred from liquid nitrogen . The interlamellar channels of the control fish were clearly visible when viewed from the inlet side (Fig. IA, C). In sharp contrast, these channels were almost completely cov ered by an amorphous, mucus-like substance in the Chat tonella-exposed fish (Fig. 1B, D). The layer covering over the lamellae was thin, and only observed on the inlet side
