With suitable treadmill conditions for eliciting maximal O2 intake. Using constant speed and increasing the grade of climb was most satisfactory. Small changes in treadmill speed or a light meal before the test did not influence the maximal O2 intake. Room temperature and "warm-up" time had some effect. Auxiliary arm work while running on the treadmill definitely increased the maximal O2 intake. The coefficient of reliability in 69 test-retest determinations under specified conditions was found to be 0.95.
