1. Receptive fields of catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) ganglion cells were studied using a pseudorandom-width binary grating that was moved through the receptive field in a number of directions. 2. Ganglion cells were divided into two groups according to the size and complexity of their receptive fields. The first group, B-cells, possessed narrow and well-defined simple receptive fields for all directions of stimulus movement. The second group, A-cells, showed wide, asymmetric and complex receptive fields with anisotropic behavior for certain directions of stimulus movement. 3. Many A-cells showed a subtle orientation sensitivity as a part of their general, overall response profile. In addition, a small percentage of A-and B-cells showed directionally sensitive responses. 4. The simple receptive fields of the B-cells appeared similar to bipolar cell receptive fields. Previous anatomical and physiological studies suggest these cells receive primarily bipolar cell input. On the other hand, the complex receptive fields of the A-cells appeared more similar to amacrine cell receptive fields. It is likely these cells receive their input mainly from amacrine cells. This distinction was also incorporated into the classification scheme.
