Recently, water diffusion was introduced as an additional MRI contrast parameter (1-3). In diffusion imaging methods, random displacements are measured within a volume element. As a result, diffusion imaging has also been named intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging (1). Zn vivo, boundaries of compartments, active and passive transport, adsorption to macromolecules, and flow may all influence the displacements of water. In addition, the anisotropy of the water displacement can be studied and may provide an additional probe of tissue microstructure (4). Moseley et al.(5, 6) have reported the use of diffusion-weighted MRI in the early detection of stroke.
