Method I: Resolution by Taking Advantage of Preferential Crystal Growth in Different Places 1-1. Fluid-Bed Resolution. A simple device that is used for carrying out resolution of a racemic mixture is shown in Figure 1. This system is composed of two fluid beds A and B, a heater C, a cooler D, a circulating pump E, and a tank. A supersaturated solution of dl isomers is circulated through the wholesystem, being heated by heater C for thenucleated crystals of the DL isomer to be dissolved, being cooled by cooler D to be supersaturated, and then passing through two fluid beds A and B. Crystals of the D isomer and those of the L isomer are added in suspension to thecirculating solution in the fluid beds A and B, respectively. The crystals are kept suspended in the fluid beds and kept not to be effused out of these fluid beds by controlling the flow rate of the circulating solution. The crystals of the d isomer and those of the L isomer grow independently in the fluid beds A and B, respectively. Thus, L and D isomers can be simultaneously resolved and separated from the solution (Ito et al., 1961). This procedure has been successfully applied to resolution of DL-alanine maléate, and the process is described in the Experimental Section.
