Tm CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL in Helsinki is a part of the University Central Hospital. The facilities of the hospital include 320 beds for sick children, from premature and newborn infants to children of 16 years of age. Almost all special branches of paediatrics are represented at the hospital. For this reason, child patients suffering from diseases which cannot be examined and treated in other hospitals are sent from all over the country to the Children’s Hospital in Helsinki. It functions also as a teaching field for medical and nursing students, the last mentioned affiliated from three schools of nursing.The chief of the hospital is Professor Niilo Hallman, MD, and the director of nursing Miss Maija Rimpilainen, RN The medical staff consists of 48 physicians, the nursing staff of three assistant directors of nursing, one night supervisor, 25 head nurses, 17 assistant head nurses, 38 specialized nurses, 79 staff nurses, 128 children’s nurses and technical and other special workers. The number of nursing personnel is 420 and the total personnel 550. In relation to the nature of the hospital, it is easy to understand that knowlcdgc and skill in many specialities of paediatrics and paediatric nursing arc required. The continuous, rapid development of treatments makes it also necessary to secure that medical and nursing personnel are up to date. The role of a teaching hospital gives additional responsibilities for the personnel. Therefore, medical and nursing directors recognized from the beginning of the hospital the need for continuous education of the staff. Later, in-service education developed further and has become an important and natural part of the functioning of the hospital.
