The pre-professionals who plan to serve as teachers and leaders in our public schools are asking," When will colleges let us out of the can?" The implication is that students feel they are locked in a college classroom for four years. Emphasis should be on a new program approach for those preprofessionals who will come face to face with students in an integrated environment and find themselves unprepared to cope with many new problems in teaching brought about since 1964 by the total integration of schools in the South. Many questions are emerging in the mind of the preprofessional—How do I communicate with all races? How do I motivate and create an environment for learning to take place for all of my students who have different backgrounds (social, economic, and psychological)? As pre-professionals have stated," The students today seem to be in another world." Why are teacher education preparation programs book-and collegecentered? Why can't the teaching-learning process include programs that provide for live active experiences in public schools with teachers and students? These questions stimulate thought on the need for change in the structure of teacher education programs in our colleges and universities.
