Bacteria that are commonly encountered in the blood in bacteremic states survived better in citrated blood at room temperature than at 37 C, and still better at 5 C. Markedly improved survival of some species was achieved by using Liquoid (sodium polyanethol sulfonate) as the anticoagulant. All species tested survived 6 hrs at room temperature in Liquoid-blood and, with the exception of Neisseria, 18 additional hr. at 5 C. The use of this anticoagulant in routine blood cultures is discussed with particular reference to reducing the proportion of contaminated specimens.
